Prayer and Liturgy

We take part in prayer and liturgy daily. Each week, the whole school follow the same theme and we listen to the same scripture. The scripture is taken from the Sunday Gospel which is shared in church. On Fridays, we gather together in the hall for a whole school worship. Classes take it in turn to lead the worship with the support of their class teacher.

Our Friday assemblies are also a chance for us to learn more about the different parts of the Liturgical year such as Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. Sometimes, we learn more about our church Saints or about events such as International Women's Day.

We sing hymns after this and then we end with a prayer before our head children dismiss the classes ready for the weekend!

Prayer and Liturgy Themes

We follow the themes in the Wednesday Word publication which is based on the Sunday Gospel.

The themes for the autumn term can be found below.

Lent

On Monday, Mrs Smith led a whole school assembly where we learnt about Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. We also talked about Lent and the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert. During Lent, as a school, we are going to try to pray, fast and give to others.

On Ash Wednesday, Father Swanson came to school and led us in a beautiful Mass with our Year 5 class. Father talked to us about how the ashes are made and invited children to help to bless the ashes and to also make a cross of ashes on the foreheads of the staff and children in our school community as we begin our Lenten journey.

Advent

During Advent, we start each week, with a Monday morning, whole-school worship. Year three teach us about the different weeks of Advent and the meaning of each candle on the Advent wreath.

First Week of Advent - Hope

Second Week of Advent - Peace

Third and Fourth weeks of Advent - Joy and Love

During our last week of school we had our whole school liturgy where we gathered as a school to celebrate the third week of Advent and to light the pink candle on the wreath which represents joy.

We also had our annual Christmas carol concert in church, which Year Six led beautifully. As part of the carol service, Year Six retold the Christmas story and our Year One children had another opportunity to wear their lovely costumes which they wore when they acted their amazing Key Stage One Nativity earlier in the week.
